WHERE I COME FROM
I am a product of change makers.
My mother and father met in the 1960's during the height of the civil rights movement, at a time when it was unacceptable for blacks and whites to marry. My father is black and my mother is white. They met in the deep south and experienced so much discrimination, they realized their relationship could never be successful if they stayed where they were. They wanted to build a life together and had the courage to leave behind everything they knew to achieve their dream.
They became engaged, packed all of their belongings and drove from Florida to San Francisco to start a new life. They had nothing but each other and hope for a bright future. Together they worked hard to pave a way in the face of various challenges, and at the discouragement of many well-intentioned people.
My parents got married in San Francisco and moved to Modesto with me and my brother a few years later. They are an inspiration to me and a powerful example. I wouldn't be the leader I am today without them. They encouraged me and showed me where hard work and dedication can take you. They were (and are) a steady force for good and an example that I admire. They have been married for more than 50 years.
